8.2.1.3 Stepwise ANM

The ANM can separate the spectral lines with a low sampling rate and short duration only if the spectrum is “sufficient separation” [15]. However, as the minimum frequency separation between heartbeat and respiration harmonics is very small, the ANM cannot be directly used to noncontact vital sign detection. The stepwise ANM (StANM) is proposed to eliminate the limitation [12]. The proposed algorithm first extracts the respiratory frequency to estimate the locations of its harmonics. Then the location of heartbeat can be obtained by solving a modified ANM. The details of stANM can be summarized as follows.
